To update the RUT online you only have to follow these steps:
1. Go to the DIAN website . Then, select the option “In your own name” if you are a natural person ; if you are a legal person, you do so with the NIT. It is necessary to create a username and password.

2. Select the “ RUT Update ” option .

How to update the RUT in person?
According to the ABC to update the RUT , you can modify any data in the 7 RUT sheets, except in the following cases:
Identification data: Cannot be modified virtually.
Address (box 41): Only 2 virtual changes are allowed in 6 months. Further changes must be made in person by appointment.
Tax Responsibilities (box 53): You cannot delete codes, only add new ones, except those granted by DIAN resolution (e.g. self-retainer, large taxpayer).
Customs users (box 54): You can only add codes 22 (Exporter) and 23 (Importer) through self-management.
Responsibility for ordinary income to special income (box 53): You cannot change this responsibility until the DIAN accepts the corresponding application.
To complete the procedure in person and update your RUT, you must go to the DIAN contact point in your city. Submit the application and the necessary documentation after scheduling your appointment.

What happens if the RUT is not updated?
It is essential to keep your RUT up to date to avoid problems. If you do not update your information in time, you could face fines that increase if the change affects aspects such as your address or economic activity.
According to Article 1.6.1.2.14 of Decree 1625 of 2016, it is the responsibility of taxpayers to update the information in the Single Tax Registry (RUT) within the month following the event that requires the modification.
Article 658-3 of the Tax Code establishes penalties for not updating information. The fine will be one (1) UVT for each day of delay. However, if the lack of updating of the RUT affects the address or economic activity of the taxpayer, the penalty will be two (2) UVT for each day of delay.
